   cardinal, political figure
   Born in Brive-la-Gaillarde, the son of an apothecary, Guillaume Dubois served as tutor to Philippe d'orléans, who, upon becoming regent, brought him to power. Venal, libertine, hypocritical, scheming, but intelligent, Dubois was a skillful diplomat. Reconciling the interests of the regent with those of Hanover, which thus made them acceptable to England, he concluded with that nation and Holland the Triple—then the Quadruple—Alliance against Spain (1717). After having held in check the cellamare plot (1718), he conducted a short war against Spain (1719-20) to obtain the dismissal of Cardinal Alberoni and stop the rebuilding of Spanish military power. Extremely ambitious, Dubois was not content to be foreign minister and obtained for himself, after the archbishopric of Cambrai and the cardinal's hat, the title of first minister (1722). He had himself elected to the Académie Française and named president of the Assembly of the Clergy.
